Fluminense Federal University (
Universidade Federal Fluminense,
UFF) is one of the four federally funded public universities in the State of
Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil.
It has six campi in the city of
Niterói, on the
South-
East side of
Guanabara Bay, and other 12 satellite campuses in various towns of the State.
The university was established on
December 18,
1960. It has about 21,600 undergraduate and 2,700 graduate students, and about 2,100 faculties (
2002).
The UFF holds the first undergraduate course in
Film ever created in Brazil. It was originally founded by
Nelson Pereira dos Santos, one of the most important Brazilian filmmakers.
The word
Fluminense in
Portuguese, from
Latin flumen ("river"), is the native adjective for the State of Rio de Janeiro.
